Baile Wemilere honors and illuminates the dances of the Orishas, the pantheon of
deities of the Yoruba/Lucumi tradition in Cuba. Your guide and teacher
is Dayana Torres Sotolongo, principal dancer with the Conjunto Folklorico
Nacional de Cuba. Drawing from her professional training and intimate
involvement with Yoruba/Lucumi traditions in Cuba, Dayana demonstrates
the steps, dance patterns, and body language that are at the core
of this ancient tradition.
For each of the principle Orishas, Dayana explains their individual
characteristics and demonstrates how those attributes manifest in
dance.
Next she demonstrates multiple step and dance patterns corresponding
to traditional Batá drum rhythms.
Finally Dayana performs a dance improvisation for each Orisha.
Though out the class, the rhythmic framework is maintained by the
seven stroke 6/8 clave pattern. Instruction is in Spanish
with English subtitles.
